In the eight chapter, Jonas gets his job. Right before the ceremony ends, the Head Elder announces that she has made a mistake. She gives an apology to her community and the community answers with an accept ion of her apology. She then tells Jonas to come up onto the stage to receive his assignment. Jonas's heart was still racing but he found a way to stand up and walk to the stage. The Head Elder then announces that Jonas has not been assigned a job. Jonas's heart is now stumped just as it was when he was skipped. "He has been selected", says the Head Elder. Jonas is now confused. As he wonders, the Head Elder also says that Jonas will be the new Receiver of Memory. This assignment was very, very rare. After all, there was only one in the community. Jonas would be taught by the already existing Receiver. The Head Elder then talked about the qualities of as receiver. They were intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the capacity to see beyond. Jonas didn't feel brave though, he felt embarrassed. The Head Elder then said that Jonas will experience very rough physical pain. She also described that it wouldn't be like getting scraped or crushing your finger in the door. "Thank you for your childhood" the Head Elder said. Then all of a sudden, he saw it again. The change like with the apple. Instead it happened with the people. They then chanted JONAS JONAS JONAS. Jonas had no idea what he would do or what would be done because of him.
