3. In the third chapter, Jonas is at his desk when he sees a 1 with lighter eyes than the usual. Lily then tells him that maybe he was from the same birthmother than him. The one was actually Gabriel, Gabe for short, the one that his father was worried about. He then hears the announcements as they say that every girl under 9 has to have a neatly tied bow on her head. He looks over to his sister and as usual, her bow is " undone and dangling". The announcements also said that the food at the ceremony was to be eaten , not taken home. Jonas then was remembered of last year. He was throwing an apple back and forth with Asher because it would help Asher with his hand-eye coordination. As he watched the same apple being thrown up into the air, he saw something different about it. He decided to take it home to study it. After he took it home, the announcements come on saying that he had to return the apple and make an apology. After his thoughts, Jonas glares into Gabe's eyes, leaving him with the thought that Gabe might be from the same birthmother than himself.
