1. In the first chapter, Jonas is thinking about how he feels about the Ceremony of Twelve as he rides home on his bike. He is wondering about how he will express his feelings to his family that evening when they are made to share their feelings. After that, his family shares their inner emotions with the rest of the family. His sister, Lily, shows her madness towards a visiting boy, his dad shows his worry about a new child in the community, and his mother shows her worry to a child who has had two out of the possible three strikes. Finally, Jonas shows that he feels apprehensive about the upcoming Twelve Ceremony.
