In the twelfth chapter, Jonas learns about the color red. Jonas is at school and everyone is talking about the first day of training. Jonas doesn't say anything because he is not allowed to. He also doesn't even know how to describe it correctly. Jonas is on his way to training riding with Fiona. When Fiona gets off her bike to the House of Old, he sees the same change with the apple. It changed. Because of Fiona's changing hair, Jonas is one-minute late for training. Jonas then asks the Giver about the changing tat he is seeing. He wonders if it is what he calls "seeing beyond". The Giver has an idea but tests it first. He makes Jonas remember the memory about the sled. Jonas doesn't know how to but he eventually finds it out. When in the memory, he looks down and the changing happens with the sled as well. Then the Giver makes Jonas look at some books at the very top shelf. Jonas said that the changing had happened with both items. The Giver then confirms that Jonas is starting to see the color red. The reason that it was those items is that they were all red. Fiona's hair was red, the sled in the memory was red, and the books he had been shown were red. Jonas also has a hard time explaining how wonderful he thought it was. Jonas also asks the Giver if he will also see all the colors just like himself. He replies saying yes, but he will see them when he does. The Giver decids to then give Jonas a memory of a rainbow. He was so excited that he wanted to show him all of the colors in a memory.
