The Dutch Republic was a hotbed for research in early modern natural history and physics. From the universities in Amsterdam and Leiden came numerous innovations in experimental science and instrument making. The establishing of learned societies for merchants and gentlemen provided members with frequent occasions to experience and discuss science, a key aspect of 18th-century scientific culture.
