The various 17th- and 18th-century editions and translations of Antonio Neri’s treatise on glassmaking, originally published in 1612 in Florence, made the book a standard reference for almost all early modern glassmakers. This singular page of neatly aligned sculpting tools and instruments placed above and within a furnace in Amsterdam is devoid of artisans and workers. The unusually empty composition gives emphasis to the variety of tools and the furnace as a working environment.
