Nikolaus Rugendas
German, 1665–1745
Equinoctial Sundial
late 17th century
Silver, brass, gilt, and original leather case
Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation
2008.4
An equinoctial sundial is used to tell time by mimicking the geometry of the earth. The dial plate represents the plane of the earth's equator and the style bisects it: its shadow changes as the sun moves through the sky, indicating the time. Nicolas Rugendas, the creator of this sundial, was a member of a prominent family of clock and sundial makers in Augsburg.
