ITALY, 16th and 17th Centuries
An intriguing facet of Florentine engagement with science has to do with glass. Glassmaking has been central for optical instruments since classical antiquity. Florence and Venice were the two leading centers for the creation of glass and lenses, as well as research in optics and linear perspective. This progress naturally led to the revolutionary use of the telescope for astronomical observation by Galileo Galilei in 1609.
