LOCATING INSTRUMENTS
Tap on an object to learn more
Where are instruments located? Beyond the space of the laboratory, instruments were collected and cherished in cabinets of curiosities and circulated from the studios of instrument makers to an increasingly specialized marketplace. Later centuries saw more specialized collections of instruments for the teaching and research of experimental sciences. Universities and learned societies depended on a comprehensive collection of teaching apparatus to better nourish the curiosity of generations of students and amateurs.
Trade in instruments began in the Renaissance and shifted centers over time from Germany and the Netherlands to England and France. Printed books publicized the production and value of instruments for an open market. Makers, collectors, and dealers of instruments were all eager to harness their visual appeal for commercial ends. As such, prints became conduits of travel for instruments, from the interior of cabinets and studios to the exterior of markets and back again.
