London emerged as the 18th-century center of instrument making and trade, largely thanks to the founding of the Royal Society in 1660, the first scientific society devoted to research on experimental science. Members of the Society constantly collaborated with craftsmen to produce and publish new instruments, creating a closely-knit circle of scientists and artisans. Many people discussed in this exhibition were affiliated with the Society.
