This striking full-page engraving presents a draftsman operating the drawing instrument constructed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, Renaissance architect and the author of this treatise on perspective. Linear perspective is articulated in the checkerboard paving of the ground and the diagonal sightline from the artist and his enormous apparatus to the female statue. Not merely an intermediary between the artist and his model, the instrument also plots a trajectory from the preliminary sketch held by his assistant to accomplished works of art, represented twice by the elevated sculpture and the mountainous landscape beyond.
