The title page shares with other prints in the series, as well as cabinets of curiosities, a similar interest in the transformation of nature into artifice by including natural and man-made products at different stages of creation, as indicated above.
The tree with cocoon on the far left represents nature in its raw state.
The stack of tree trunks in the right foreground represents nature gathered and collected by human intervention.
In the right middle ground, the distillation unit that purifies water represents the processing of natural material for human use.
The canon, the mechanical clock, and the pair of stirrups at the lower center are man-made artifacts ready for use.
In the upper register, the map of America, the abstract diagram of the compass rose, and the printing press with a line of drying sheets between them transform human discoveries and artifacts into printed knowledge.
