PRINTING INSTRUMENTS
This exhibition showcases the emergence of scientifica in printed images and books from the 16th
century onwards. The interest in instruments grew alongside the Renaissance invention of the printing press. Printed images of instruments quickly proliferated in various contexts, from treatises on the arts to images celebrating modern technologies. In later centuries, illustrated books on mechanical, electrical, and astronomical sciences foregrounded instruments as key actors in experimentation.
The prints and books in this exhibition examine four central questions about instruments: What is
an instrument? Who uses or makes it? How is it used? And finally, where is it kept, traded, and col-
lected? Exhibited alongside re-created cabinets and covering a wide range of sciences, these images trace the parallel movement of objects in collections and ideas in books. Together they speak forcefully of the crucial role instruments played in the pursuit and production of knowledge in early modern Europe.
