Between 1725 and 1730, Edmund Culpeper, a London instrument maker of the Royal Society, invented this double reflecting microscope that gathered light through a reflective mirror placed under the objective lens. Various components and accessories such as magnifying lenses, a hair brush, and a pair of pliers to pick up objects would have been encased by a portable kit, usually pyramidal in shape. The upright design, however, would soon be improved by the Cuff-type microscope, a full set of which is also displayed in the gallery.
