GERMANY, 16th Century
Nuremberg is the hometown of the great German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer. Together with the neighboring town of Augsburg, the two cities were the 16th-century birthplace of a number of important navigational instruments.
Largely spurred by the demand for accurate geographical information in international trade, groups of artisans in metalwork and specialist crafts produced highly prized sundials for merchants and researchers.
