This unassuming volume of surgical instruments functions as a medical trade catalogue, a type of publication that emerged at the turn of the 19th century. Emphasis is placed on the visual presentation of medical tools, printed to scale. Such catalogues were driven by the burgeoning instrument trade to fulfill the demand of a new class of learned medical practitioners, self-dubbed "Gentlemen of the Faculty." In Franz Andreas Ott’s manual, no text accompanies the image. Specific items, however, are embossed with the names of their makers or owners to indicate their distinctive craftsmanship, an increasingly valued aspect of medical instruments.
