There were only ten days a month which offered suitable tides and moonlight required for navigation. June 6th was to be a full moon, June 5th 1944 was tentatively chosen for the crossing but the weather on June 4th turned nasty with strong winds and high seas which would prevent smaller boats putting to sea and low clouds stop airplanes from taking off. The invasion was postponed to the 6th.
The weather was even worse over France and Rommel decided to go to Berlin to celebrate his wife's birthday believing an attack would be impossible for several days. (He was injured when he rushed back to Normandy when his car was hit by shrapnel in Livarot.)
Some German troops were stood down.
Meantime an armada of every kind of floating device gathered off Portsmouth and other ports in southern England.
ALLIED PLANS
Supplies, ships, planes, trucks, artillery and everything needed for D Day was assembled in the U. K.
Rommel with his wife and son.
