THEN, RELATIVE QUIET RETURNED
The port was a hub of activity into the beginning of 1945. As the Allied Forces pushed back the Germans and later entered Germany, it was no longer useful and dismanteled.
However, the detritus of war remained. The ruins, the scarred land, the wrecks in the sea, the trenches, temporary graves and worst of all the dangerous ammunition which was left everywhere.
A seascape is maybe one of the more difficult to cleanse after conflict: the water covers, moves, hides and then reveals objects over time.
As children in the 1960s, we played in the trenches and found many artifacts. Divers often found relics among the wrecks.
However, a dutch company was
hired to clear the sea of danger
and de miners covered the land.
