As it happens, one of the most important incursions on D Day took place very close to the chalet ruins.

The second wave of landing craft, fared not much better than the former in the Dog Green sector. The Germans were still mowing down anyone who made it to the beach. The water was red, there were hundreds of bodies floating in the surf, heads bobbed up and down, loads of debris was bumping into the bodies, the cliffs were smoking or on fire, visibility was dreadful. Landmarks were difficult to make out. It was a sickening sight.
Two boats going in to the right, the camping side of the road, were badly hit. The landing craft going to the left, towards the chalet grounds were taken by the currents to the next sector, Dog White.

The only craft which landed on Dog Green was lucky and hit a pocket in the German fire. No mortar fire reached the ramp when it was lowered. Taylor and his men crawled across the beach to the sea wall, and then over the wall and largely protected. To his right he saw his officers, Donaldson and Winkler, had been killed. Taylor lost just four men and two wounded. He led his troops up the cliff -just on the Jeannot side of the chalet grounds, up across the fields, somehow passed the machine-gun tower and over the trenches to le Hamel du Pretre where they turned right into Vierville.
After two hours of clearing the enemy along the Rue des Pavees and without further loss of life, he met Pierce, a lone survivor from the boats which landed at the campsite side, who informed Taylor that his officer was dead and that Taylor was now in charge. They set up in la ferme d'Ormel (the canon farm on the way into Vierville.) Here he encountered Germans in the hedgerows. Following a fortuitous grenade strike by the Americans, the 24 Germans surrendered and Taylor was able to defend the road to Formigny and prevent much needed ammunition reinforcements from the Germans getting to the Vierville defence positions. His group of 20 surviving men had established a base further inland than any other part of the invasion when he was called to return towards the sea to join the remnants of the battalion at Vierville.
