The invasion fleet was drawn from eight different navies, comprising 6,939 vessels: 1,213 warships, 4,126 transport vessels (landing ships and landing craft), and 736 ancillary craft and 864 merchant vessels. You can imagine the choreography of getting the right vessels together at the right place and time.
Many of the soldiers had been on the ships and craft for a couple days in very rough weather and were extremely seasick and already sleep deprived. The five main ships and accompanying flotilla crossed the channel without a problem and achored about ten miles off the Omaha beach waiting for the signal to begin the operation. The landing craft were launched and they circled round and round behind a smoke screen. The sea was choppy and the men were even more seasick.
