The paintings above are both of Port-en-Bessin and show the use of "cabestans" winches. They are both dated 1830, the one above is by Le Nourichel and the one below by Eugene Lepoitevin.
FISH
Naturally, fishing is the human activity which has predominated in front of the parcel of land but the lack of a port hampered the development of a large professional fleet.
Due to the tides on the beach at Vierville, they used winches on the land to wind in bigger boats off the beach until a port was built in the 15 century.
Semi-professional fishermen and women made an income from collecting mussels, shrimp, various cockles and such from the rocks, most especially around la Pointe de la Percee.
