On Oct 21, 1941, the Feldkommandantur declared a no-go area along the coast. It extended 10 to 15 kilometres inland and included several main thoroughfares -to Bayeux and Cherbourg for example. Anyone whose main residence was not in the area needed special papers to enter. So it was difficult for anyone but residents to go to Vierville. News got out however, villagers passed on information. The resistance in Calvados was largely run by postmen and teachers, including the primary school teacher in Formigny.
However, there was nothing to be done about the chalet, very few of the villas were not second homes. They were simply taken over by the Germans...if the Germans needed them.
