This document traces the history of a small plot of land on the coast of Normandy, at Vierville-sur-mer. The plot reaches from a road along a sandy beach, away from the sea across a small flattish strip, and then rises dramatically up a cliff. It ends when the stone incline gives way to flat, fertile fields.
It is, at first glance, unremarkable, except that it is situated on a relatively unspoilt beach in the middle of a rather crowded and busy Europe.
However this patch of land has witnessed not only the small dramas of individual families and but also the large dramas which shape countries and continents.
In addition, its story illustrates how we humans feel bound through shared experience to a particular place.
This work is dedicated to the memory of Jules and Valentine Roulland who had no children of their own but have given, through their legacy, much to several generations which followed them.
