The sea used to be covered with a prehistoric forest. As a result there are outcrops of peat which were exploited from early times and you can see the regular traces of systematic harvesting depending on how the tides carve the beach. (In fact when fuel was in short supply during the second world war, people used the resource when they could get at it.) Once it is extracted, it is dried and then lit. It gives a low level slow burn usually with a lot of smoke.
In the photo on the left you can see the peat excavation lines clearly. The picture on the right shows what happened when a bomb landed on the peat seam in 1944 (taken 1985).
