Of course these set-backs marked only the beginning of a cruel and difficult period...declaration of war, the French military collapse, the German occupation of Paris and Normandy compounded personal misfortune.
The shock of the precipitous defeat of the French army and the humiliation of the occupation had a profound effect on the family, and it had the consequence of separating the sisters-in-law and the Fromond sisters and kept them all away from the chalet at Vierville.
Travel was limited but Valentine and Blanche Victorine kept in close correspondence. Valentine moved to a house owned by the church near the Town Hall in Bayeux. The post, which came 3 times a day, still worked for a time during the occupation and they exchanged parcels, recipes and news frequently. Apart from discussing the girls and acquaintances, they shared tips for getting around shortages of supplies. Paper was difficult to get a hold of and they used every scrap they could find and even wrote in the margins.
